A few more interesting facts on the United flight that was rocked by extreme turbulence over Kansas. Check out the University of Wisconsin Satellite Imagery link, where you’ll find some interesting images of the storms that were occurring in the vicinity of the plane around the time of the incident.
The atmosphere was extremely unstable with air temps at the 30, 000 foot level as cold as -130 degrees F over Kansas. A forecast sounding over Springfield, Missouri indicated the vertical velocity of the air near the flight path to be around 163 mph. Incredible.
