A minority health fair helps hundreds

Sunday, hundreds of people took advantage of the Minority Health Fair in Grand Island. It was the second year the Multicultural Coalition has held the event; helping the uninsured get free medical help.
“Health is such an important issue, especially among minorities. Nationally our numbers of chronic health issues are much higher in minority communities than majority communities,” said Yolanda Chavez Nuncio, from the Multicultural Coalition.
That is why the multicultural coalition in Grand Island is holding the health fair, to help the minority community get exams, education, and advice for free.
“There are so many people that do not have doctors or health insurance or do not speak English. This is a place they can come to get some information and then go seek the proper help,” said Laura Lopez.
That is why the Coronado family was there; to get free screenings that they say they would not normally be able to afford, and are hard to understand without a translator by their side.
Rosa Coronado says she thinks this event is important because they have free exams such as diabetes, cholesterol, and other free exams like mammograms, dental checks, and vision screenings.
“This is a good way for us to promote wellness and a healthy lifestyle among the minority community,” said Nuncio.
Teaching kids how to wash their hands the right way and to eat a healthy diet.
For parents it is a chance to hear from a nurse or dental hygienist; something many in this community do not get very often.
Last year, only about a hundred people attended the health fair. This year, they more than doubled that, just in the first hour.
