In less than a month, builders, suppliers and sub-contractors will be in the midst of the 2008 Home Builders Blitz. The project is part of a national effort to build over 200 Habitat homes, the week of May 31-June 6.
Grand Island is one of three sites across the state participating in the Blitz Build project. In preparation for the Grand Island build, Katzberg Concrete Construction recently formed and poured the Grand Island Blitz Build homes' footings and crawlspace walls, donating their services.
Katzberg's work will pave the way for other contractors who are also donating their time and materials to build the Habitat home, which is the affiliate's 47th home overall.
On May 31, Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity building committee members will be doing additional prep work so that local professionals can complete their pieces to the puzzle, June 2-June 6. Over 33 builders, suppliers and sub-contractors will be donating their time, and materials.
"The gift they are giving Habitat is significant", said Dana Jelinek, Director for the Habitat affiliate.
"It's hard to say just yet what our out of pocket costs will be. But we estimate the home will cost less than 20% of what one typically costs to build."
The family for the home was selected earlier this year and has been working on their required 500 sweat equity hours. The hours represent the down-payment on the home, which will be purchased by the family with a no-interest home loan.
Habitat for Humanity works with donors and volunteers to help make safe, affordable housing available to low-income families who would not be able to purchase a home on the own.
