E + M: The Proposal

How We Met...

Long ago, in a far way land... Actually, the tale of a true damsel in distress began at our mutual friends' home in June of 2010. Elliott was sitting at the kitchen table glued to his laptop (like normal) while he waited for some buddies to arrive so they could catch a night session of the College World Series (CWS).

While he waited patiently - in came an emotional Melissa that had been rescued by mutual friends - very distraught after her boyfriend at the time had left her stranded downtown Omaha after the day time session of the CWS. (If you've ever experienced the post-game mayhem of a CWS Summer session, you would completely understand how she felt.)

Upset, crying, and sweaty, Melissa made everyone well aware of her distaste for the poor fellow whom abandoned her without a ride home, no car keys, and with a dead cell phone battery.

Never to fear, Elliott had just the solution! Overhearing the bellowing maiden, he jumped up swiftly out of his seat, introduced himself, and like a true entrepreneur made her a generous offer of sale of his vehicle. Though, unsuccessful with his initial sales pitch, the two would live happily-ever- ...after several dinner dates to their favorite Mexican restaurant La Mesa, multiple midnight private karaoke duet performances, and an eventual proposal.

The Proposal...

'Twas the night before New Year's and all through the house, not a creature was stirring... Well, yes, if you consider Elliott a creature (and an odd one indeed); he was frantically trying to make sure all the loose ends of his elaborate proposal plan were tied prior to Melissa's routine evening arrival home from her work shift.

Melissa had been notified earlier in the day that dinner reservations had been made for 8:30 PM at the couple's favorite Mexican restaurant, La Mesa. Prepared for her arrival and necessary swift wardrobe change, Elliott had her evening attire laid out on the bed. Anticipating Melissa to be home around 7:30 PM like normal, the overly anxious Elliott paced around the house continuously checking the time on his watch again and again until Melissa walked through the door. At 8:15 PM, Melissa arrived home openly expressing her severe discontentment for the co-worker whom was late to relieve her of her nursing shift.

Peevishly, Melissa scurried hastily to get ready and ordered Elliott to accomplish a long list of tasks for her prior to departing to dinner. Thinking that Melissa had somehow been clued in on his plan and was purposefully throwing never-ending roadblocks at him, Elliott finally refused to comply with her requests until his agenda had been addressed. Encouraging Melissa to take her time, he wiped the perspiration from his brow and called the restaurant to push their reservation back a half hour, allowing Melissa the needed preparatory time to semi-relax and meet her date night "ready" standards.

With plenty of time remaining prior to their new reservation time, Elliott placed a shiny silver box on the bed while Melissa finished getting ready. After several more rushed attempts by Melissa to get out the door and onward to dinner, Elliott finally got her to open her New Year's Eve present. Inside the box was a sparkly, sexy, glam diamanté... Actually, what was inside the box was part of an ongoing inside joke between the two (If you wish to find out her reaction to the mystery box articles, please ask Melissa.) ;-)

As Melissa sat on the bed trying to figure out what exactly was going on, Elliott dropped to his knee, popped the question, and her response in utter disbelief was indubitably, "Yes!"
