As part of the annual Can Jam, thousands of area elementary students are participating in a coloring contest for Habitat for Humanity. Nearly 2700 coloring sheets may be seen throughout April at the Conestoga Mall in Grand Island. It took volunteers 43.5 hours to post all the entries.
Seventeen elementary schools regularly participate in the Can Jam, including Grand Island public, Trinity Lutheran, Grand Island Christian and Central City. This event also encourages environmental education and aluminum can recycling for Habitat for Humanity.
At the beginning of April, student artwork is displayed with winners announced early in April. During the month, students will also have activities at their schools leading up to Can Jam week, April 20 through 24. Students will have can drives to benefit Habitat's housing program in celebration of Earth Day.
The community is also encouraged to recycle cans for Habitat at an area drop site, at a participating school or by dropping their cans off at the Can Jam trailer which will be located in the west parking lot of the mall, April 20 through 26.
Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity has been recycling aluminum cans year-round since July 2001. Since then, more than 16 million cans for Habitat have been recycled, raising over $420,000. Money earned has helped build many safe, affordable homes in the area.
