GISH student wins poetry contest

Grand Island Senior High School junior Nolan Green has been selected as a winner of the 2009 Poetry of Place Celebration contest sponsored by the Nebraska Writing Project at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Green is a student in English teacher April Lambert's class. He was one of four high school students selected from all nominees. Green will join other award winners on May 1 at the State Capitol for a ceremony and live reading with Nebraska State Poet William Kloefkorn and Nebraska poets Twyla Hansen and Matt Mason. Green's poetry will be published on the Nebraska Writing Project Web site ([ http://www.unl.edu/newp ]www.unl.edu/newp) this summer. The Poetry of Place Celebration is funded by the Nebraska Humanities Council and encourages writing about Nebraska place in rural, urban, and suburban settings. Teachers from throughout Nebraska could submit the poetry of three students per school grade category (1-5, 6-8, and 9-12).
