Gearing Up For Can Recycling Drive

If you placed all the cans recycled for Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity end to end, how many miles would they stretch? 1,769 miles. That’s the exact distance from Dallas, TX to Vancouver, Canada.

Although that’s impressive, it’s even more remarkable that money raised from can recycling has helped build 32 Habitat homes locally. Since aluminum can recycling is so important to the organization, the week prior to Earth Day has been set aside for a special recycling drive.

Can Jam is a week-long community recycling event that invites current and one time recyclers to participate.
Joining in the action are 15 local elementary schools and the Conestoga Mall. Each is asking people to gather their cans from work, organizations, and events and give them to Habitat for Humanity the week of April 15-21. Donated cans will be processed on Earth Day, April 22.

During the school week April 15-19, participating elementary schools will be hosting temporary, aluminum can drop sites. Schools include Grand Island Public elementary schools and Central City Elementary. Through the entire week, Conestoga Mall will host a collection site on the west parking lot.

“The Can Jam is a way for us to boost awareness of our can recycling program and get more people involved”, said Dana Jelinek of Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity.

Since starting the Cans for Habitat program in 2001, over 23.6 million cans have been recycled for the local housing program. However, studies show that less than half the cans made are recycled.

“If we can get people started recycling, not only will it help the environment, but it can also build homes in our community,” added Jelinek.

Throughout the year, people can recycle cans at any of Habitat’s 15 can recycling sites, many located at Pump and Pantry stores throughout Hall, Hamilton, Howard, Merrick and York Counties. Other sites include Wayne Cyclery, Grand Island Ace Hardware and Wood River United Methodist Church, as well as Kramer’s Auto Parts and Iron.

“We’re grateful to all our donors, our recycling partners and the volunteers who collect and process the cans,” said Jelinek, “It’s amazing what we’ve all been able to do, one can at a time.”

For more information about the Can Jam, can recycling or Habitat for Humanity, call 308-385-5510. Habitat for Humanity will also be participating in the Earth Day event at the Conestoga Mall, April 21.

After months of waiting, Grand Island Little Theatre (GILT) has been given permission to announce their summer show, Monty Python's "Spamalot".
This musical stage production, is a take-off of the popular motion picture "Monty Python and the Holy Grail". The show is a tongue-in-cheek romp that will draw laughs from everyone, not just Python fans.
The nearly two year process to bring the show to the area started with inquiries about its availability. But, it wasn't until March of 2012 that the organization could even apply to Theatrical Rights Worldwide, for approval. For several months, GILT's board, production council and a smattering of volunteers have been aware that permission to stage the show had been granted. However, a stipulation in the contract did not allow the group to announce it had been approved until just last week.
As the first group in Nebraska granted permission to stage the musical, excitement is brewing. Plans are now underway for the show, which will open mid-June.
Because the show has such broad appeal, and a somewhat cult following, organizers are building a list of those interested in auditioning and working back-stage.
"We know there are people throughout Central Nebraska who will want to be part of this," said Director, Ron Jelinek, "So we're looking for names and contact information to build a data-base."
"There are people who've said things like 'if you're doing the show, I want to be part of it'", added Jelinek, "We need those people, and any others interested, to contact us to get on our mailing and e-mail list."
Jelinek, and Musical Director, Greg Sanchez, are seeking on-stage, backstage and musical talent from throughout the area. Jelinek may be reached by calling 308-379-2907 or e-mailing aceadcre8tor@gmail.com. Sanchez, may be reached at 308-382-8032.
Grand Island Little Theatre is currently in rehearsals for Agatha Christie's, "The Mousetrap", which runs February 15-17 and 22-24 at College Park. The final show of the 2012-2013 is "The New Kid on the Block", which will be on stage April 12-14 and 19-21. "Spamalot" will be in June and will be the first show of the 2013-2014 season.

Ringing for ‘OTHERS!!”
402.463.0529

The red kettle story goes back to 1891, when Joseph McFee, a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco, California, was overwhelmed with the number of poor in that city. McFee had a simple idea. He wanted to provide free Christmas dinners to 1,000 of the poorest of those people, to give them some holiday hope. Sadly, he had no money for the meals.

McFee tossed and turned at night, praying and thinking about the problem. Slowly, a solution came. He recalled his days as a sailor in Liverpool, England. At Stage Landing, where the ships docked, a large iron kettle called "Simpson's Pot" had been placed. People walking by would toss in a coin or two for the needy.

Finding a pot, Captain McFee put it at the Oakland Ferry Landing, by the foot of San Francisco's busy Market Street. He placed a sign next to it that read, "Keep the Pot Boiling."
Word got around quickly, and by Christmas the kettle had raised enough money to feed the poor.

Many years ago, the Founder of The Salvation Army, William booth, then very old, was preparing to send his annual Christmas message to Salvationists around the world. In those days, communication was by telegraph, and you paid for each word that you sent. Times were tough and the Army was short on money, so William Booth sent a one-word telegram conveying the very heart of the Army’s mission.

The word he sent was:

‘OTHERS’

Christmas may be nearly two months away, but Grand Island Area Habitat for Humanity wants to get you in the mood now.

On December 2, the housing program will hold it's Christmas Cookie Walk. Over 10,000 cookies are needed for this annual event that sells donated holiday cookies by the pound, with proceeds building homes in the area.

Because so many of the usual bakers have switched from landlines to cell phones, it's been harder for the organization to reach their regular volunteers. That's why Habitat is asking for your help.

About 200 bakers are needed to hit the 10,000 cookie goal. Yet, so far the organization has just half the commitments needed. Habitat is looking for bakers who can make between 4 and 6 doz holiday cookies. Buyers are looking for treats to give as gifts or share at gatherings, so "every day" cookies tend to get passed over. Colorful, fancy or unique cookies are the best.

If you, your organization or business can help, please contact Dana or Megan at 308-385-5510 or gihfh@yahoo.com.

The Christmas Cookie Walk is scheduled for Sunday, December 2 at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The sale will be from 1-2:30 p.m. in the church's Family Life Center.
